In 2019, there were 22 key special projects under the "Stem Cells and Translational Research" initiative, with total funding amounting to 367 million yuan.
Recently, the Ministry of Science and Technology has successively released lists of proposed projects for nine key national R&D programs. The first announcement includes the 2019 list of proposed projects under the "Stem Cells and Translational Research" key special program.
In the key special project on "Stem Cells and Translational Research," a total of 22 projects have received central government funding exceeding 367 million yuan, with all projects scheduled for implementation between 2019 and 2023.
Publicly available information indicates that the Stem Cell and Translational Research Pilot Program is one of the key national R&D initiatives pioneered by the government. From 2016 to 2018, a total of 98 projects were approved and supported under this program, focusing on priority research areas—including 30 projects specifically aimed at young scientists.
The "2019 Project Application Guidelines for the Key Special Project on 'Stem Cells and Translational Research,'" released in February this year, clearly states that in 2019, the special project will continue to fund a series of initiatives, with priority given to supporting 12 specific research areas. The total estimated national funding allocation is 400 million yuan—of which up to 60 million yuan is earmarked for supporting 10 projects aimed at young scientists.
However, the approved results of the projects announced today differ slightly from the data outlined in the application guidelines. A total of 22 projects have been placed on public display, with a combined funding amount of 367 million yuan. Among these 22 projects, the vast majority were awarded to universities and their affiliated hospitals, as well as institutions under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The project receiving the largest funding is "Research on Gene Therapy for Single-Gene Genetic Diseases," led by Li Wei from the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences—this groundbreaking initiative has been allocated an impressive 28.08 million yuan.
Colleges and their affiliated hospitals jointly lead a total of 14 projects, with Shanghai Jiao Tong University taking the lead in the most, having three projects listed for public announcement. Sun Yat-sen University also has two projects on the list, with total funding amounting to 10.36 million yuan. Meanwhile, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Shandong University, Wuhan University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Yunnan Agricultural University, Zhejiang University, Zhengzhou University, the Third Military Medical University of the People's Liberation Army, and Xiangya Hospital of Central South University each lead one project.
