I’ve heard of so many types of stem cells that I’m totally confused—so, which one is actually the best?

Induced pluripotent stem cells are stem cells created by using cytokines to "reverse the growth" of ordinary cells. As a non-expert, you don’t need to memorize every single term. Each type of stem cell possesses unique biological characteristics that are essential for its specific therapeutic applications. Therefore, it’s inaccurate to claim that one type of stem cell is universally "best." Ultimately, treating any particular disease requires rigorous scientific research and clinical trials to confirm both the safety and effectiveness of the therapy.

Why is everyone so focused on stem cells?

Stem cells hold promise for treating diseases that are difficult to address with conventional methods, and advancements in this research are frequently highlighted in the media. As a result, individuals with relevant treatment needs have grown deeply interested in these studies, eagerly anticipating the day when stem-cell technologies or therapies can be widely available to combat their conditions.

What are stem cells?

You may have heard about stem cells in the news, or perhaps seen posts on social media touting their incredible abilities. Maybe you’re wondering whether they could help a loved one struggling with a serious illness—or even if they might allow you to turn back the clock and reverse aging. But first, you’ll want to understand exactly what stem cells are.

Where do stem cells come from?

Stem cells serve as the source of all other cells—so where do stem cells themselves come from? Broadly speaking, the fertilized egg, which marks the very beginning of human development, is the most advanced type of stem cell. As the fertilized egg divides repeatedly, it develops into an embryo and eventually matures into a fetus. During this developmental process, some stem cells lose their stem-cell characteristics and differentiate into specialized, functional cells. Meanwhile, a subset of cells retains varying degrees of stem-cell properties—and these remaining stem cells are the ultimate source of adult stem cells. Adult stem cells play a critical role in maintaining the proper functioning of the body’s systems.
