Delegates Discuss National Affairs | Representative Li Zhenguo: Traditional Chinese Medicine Requires Multi-Pronged Efforts for Heritage and Innovation
2020-05-21
China Food and Drug News (Reporter: Luo Nan) – Promoting the inheritance, innovation, and development of traditional Chinese medicine has been elevated to a national strategy. During the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, TCM played a positive role in boosting the body’s immune system and helping to control the progression of the disease. In light of this, Li Zhenguo, a deputy to the National People’s Congress and Chairman of Jiuzhitang Co., Ltd., has proposed a comprehensive revitalization of the TCM sector.
According to Representative Li Zhenguo, traditional medicine and precision medicine share common ground—after all, the core principles of TCM, such as "treating the same disease with different methods," "treating different diseases with the same method," and "diagnosing and treating based on syndrome differentiation," essentially embody the essence of precision medicine. He suggests that the nation should encourage traditional medicine and precision medicine to leverage their respective strengths, fostering a dynamic synergy between the two fields. Additionally, he urges medical institutions to embrace new technologies and innovative models, enabling the integrated application of traditional and precision medicine to enhance our country's capacity to tackle critical illnesses effectively.
The inheritance, innovation, and development of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) require efforts on multiple fronts. Representative Li Zhenguo suggests strengthening public education and awareness about TCM through engaging, widely participatory formats that resonate with people, thereby fostering a societal and cultural environment that embraces TCM traditions. Additionally, he emphasizes accelerating the integration of modern technologies—such as the internet, big data, and artificial intelligence—with the TCM industry. This includes leveraging big data to enhance the efficiency of TCM diagnosis and treatment, while using technological advancements to elevate the overall competitiveness of the Chinese medicinal products sector, ultimately meeting public demand for high-quality healthcare services. Finally, he advocates for the steady advancement of TCM compound formulations derived from ancient classic prescriptions, while reinforcing government medical insurance policies to provide stronger support for TCM. This should gradually expand the scope of reimbursement for TCM treatments, medicinal products, and hospital-developed TCM preparations.
